Homeopathy is a safe and effective form of personalized medicine. It is an art and a science and follows a special rule of nature called the Law of Similars. This law states “like cures like,” or that a medicine can cure a sick person if it can cause similar sickness in a healthy person.
The word “homeopathic” is derived from the Greek words homeos meaning “similar” and pathos meaning “disease” or “suffering.” Thus, homeopathy means, “to treat with a remedy that produces an effect similar to the disease or suffering.”
Following the Law of Similars, or “like cures like,” a Homeopath chooses uses very small doses of medicines called homeopathic remedies to restore the body to health. These remedies are safe and gentle and have no known side effects.
Is Homeopathy New?
The Law of Similars has been known since at least the time of Hippocrates (ca. 400 B.C.), but it was Samuel Hahnemann who fully stated the ideas of homeopathy in the early 1800′s. He was a doctor and a chemist in Germany who lived from 1755 to 1843.
By 1900, about twenty percent of doctors in the United States were homeopaths, but due to various political and social changes, homeopathy became relatively unknown in the USA until recently. There is wider acceptance of homeopathy in such countries as France, Germany, Mexico, Argentina, India and Great Britain. In fact, the family doctor to England’s Queen Elizabeth is a homeopathic physician.
Homeopathy is gaining again in popularity because it is safe, gentle and effective.
What are Homeopathic Remedies?
Homeopathic remedies are prepared according to the guidelines of the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States (HPUS), which was written into law in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938. Any plant, mineral or animal substance can be used as a remedy.
During preparation, the original substance is diluted in liquid repeatedly, vigorously shaken with each dilution and then usually applied to sucrose pellets.
Unusual as it sounds, these very small amounts of remedies can act very strongly when used properly. Also, because the remedies are very diluted, they are extremely safe.
What you can expect at your homeopathic consultation:
Homeopaths aim to prescribe for the whole person, not a single symptom. Illness is regarded as the body’s reaction to a stress, and each person reacts to a given stress in a unique way.
Initial interviews may take up to 2 hours, depending on your health complaints.
All of your body’s systems will be reviewed: physical, mental, cognitive and emotional. Information you share at our interview will be kept in the strictest confidence.
The remedy most homeopathic, or most similar to, your body’s unique symptom pattern will then be chosen. A sliding scale fee structure is available. The goal here is not to make money but to help those in need to get back to a place of feeling well again.
